Review:

The National Museum of San Matteo is housed in the former 11th-century Benedictine convent of San Matteo. Virtually destroyed during WWII, only remnants of the church and medieval wall remain. The convent was transformed into a museum after the building was restored in 1949. Visitors will find Pisa’s largest collection of art here. Medieval pottery and crockery, precious jewels, medieval coins and seals, and stone statues dating to the middle ages are all displayed. There are Romanesque sculptures, plus masterpieces by sculptors Donatello and Nicola Pisano. The museum has a collection of over 200 wood sculptures from the 13th century to the modern era, plus distinguished paintings over the same period.
