Review:
Come and discover a rich and incredible story of freedom at the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. Largely regarded as the town where “freedom began”, Mitchelville was the very first self-governed African American community in the United States to be founded during the Civil War. Founded in 1862, Mitchelville was a fully functioning town with formerly enslaved individuals from Sea Islands such as West Africa, Cameroon, Angola, and Sierra Leone as its residents. Visitors to the park can see the remnants of this groundbreaking town like the Praise House, the Homestead House, and the Bateau. There are also opportunities to learn traditional arts like net casting or to see a collection of artifacts related to the town at the Westin Hilton Head.
