Looking for a vibrant suburban destination with riverwalk charm, top-tier dining, and rich history? I always recommend Naperville when someone wants a weekend escape that blends small-town charm with just the right amount of big-city energy. Just west of Chicago, Naperville feels polished but welcoming—whether you're wandering along the scenic Riverwalk, checking out a museum, or sitting down for a great meal, you’ll feel both relaxed and inspired here.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, May through October is when Naperville truly shines. I’ve spent sunny afternoons strolling the Riverwalk with a coffee in hand, and warm evenings dining outdoors under string lights—it’s picture perfect. Summer brings concerts and festivals, while fall adds colorful trees and crisp, cozy vibes. If you visit in winter, you’ll find a quieter side of town with festive lights, cute cafés, and holiday cheer that makes it feel like a winter postcard.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually take I-88 or I-355—Naperville’s about 35 miles west of downtown Chicago, and the drive is easy. There’s plenty of parking downtown too, which is always a plus.
- By Train: When I don’t want to deal with traffic, I hop on Metra’s BNSF line from Union Station. It’s about a 45-minute ride and drops you right near the action.
- By Air: If you’re flying in, both O’Hare and Midway airports are roughly 45 minutes to an hour away by car. I’ve used both, and it really just depends on flight deals or where you're coming from.
Where to Stay
- Hotel Indigo Naperville Riverwalk – I stayed here for a girls’ weekend, and the location couldn’t have been better. It’s stylish, comfy, and right on the Riverwalk—perfect if you love being in the middle of everything.
- Harrison House Bed & Breakfast – If you’re planning a romantic escape, this historic inn is a gem. I loved the warm hospitality, cozy rooms, and how close it was to downtown shops and dining.
- Courtyard by Marriott Naperville – I’ve stayed here on work trips and appreciated the modern amenities and easy access to expressways. It’s a reliable, comfortable choice, especially if you’re driving in or traveling with family.
