PEN World Voices is the New York Festival of International Literature, an international literary event held annually in various venues across New York City. The only international literary festival in the States, PEN World Voices is a weeklong series of events focusing on human rights. The festival was founded in 2005 by Esther Allen, Salman Rushdie, and Michael Roberts in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, with the goal of broadening channels of communication between the US and the world. The festival attracts the world’s most respected writers and has so far presented over 1,500 writers and artists from 118 countries. The festival is produced by PEN America, an organization that works to “advance literature, defend free expression, and foster international literary fellowship.”
