When I want mountain views, small-town charm, and a bit of history with my weekend getaway, I head to Jim Thorpe—and I think you’ll fall in love with it too. Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, this town feels like stepping into a Victorian postcard. I’ve strolled through its brick-lined streets, biked scenic river trails, and warmed up in local cafés after a day of exploring. Whether you're here for the views, the architecture, or the cozy atmosphere, Jim Thorpe never disappoints.
Best Time to Visit
My favorite time to visit is between May and October. You’ll catch the best weather for hiking, biking, and sightseeing in spring and summer, while fall transforms the whole area into a colorful leaf-filled wonderland. I’ve also come in winter for a quieter vibe and snow sports nearby—and if you love twinkling lights and fireplaces, you’ll feel right at home.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in via U.S. Route 209—Jim Thorpe is about 1.5 hours from Philly and 2 hours from NYC. You’ll enjoy a scenic ride, especially as you get closer to the mountains.
- By Train: While there’s no regular Amtrak service, I’ve taken one of the seasonal excursions from Reading or Port Clinton, and it’s a beautiful way to arrive if the timing works for you.
- By Bus: Bus service is limited, so I always recommend driving. You’ll want your own wheels to explore the area fully and make the most of your time.
Where to Stay
- The Inn at Jim Thorpe – I’ve stayed here for the history and the location. You’ll be right in the center of town, with charming antique rooms and a relaxing spa to unwind after your adventures.
- Harry Packer Mansion Inn – If you’re looking for something romantic or just love a good mystery, this B&B is a must. I came for a murder mystery weekend and had a blast—it’s elegant, fun, and unforgettable.
- Mountain View Suites – I chose this for a more modern feel with great space. You’ll have easy walking access to downtown, plus the comfort of a stylish suite to relax in after exploring.
