The Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens is a small 12-acre zoo nestled in a lush rainforest in Hilo and is home to a variety of rainforest animals and endangered Hawaiian species such as lemurs, spider monkeys, and nene geese, the Hawaiian State bird. Other exciting residents among the 80 species of animals that call the zoo home include an Aldabra tortoise named Beauregard, Namaste - a rare white Bengal tiger, and Arnie the water buffalo. The only tropical zoo in the United States, the Pana?ewa Rainforest Zoo is also a botanical garden and features a fantastic array of tropical flowering plants, shrubs, and trees such as bamboos, orchids, palms, and a beautiful water garden.
