The Laupahoehoe Train Museum is a small, community-run museum on the beautiful Hamakua Heritage Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii that showcases the history of the railroads on the island of Hawaii. The little museum also preserves, promotes, and protects the culture and history of the North Hilo and Hamakua districts by honoring the colorful history of the Hilo Railroad, which operated between 1899 and 1946. Located in the old station agent's house, the museum features antique furnishing from the early 1900s and a wide range of fascinating railroad artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, maps, and displays. The museum is surrounded by lush tropical gardens with fruit trees and ornamentals that are the perfect place to picnic and relax with the family.
