One of Savannah’s 22 squares, Chippewa Square is located on Bull Street and McDonough Street, in the heart of historic downtown Savannah. The square was laid out in 1815 and is named for the Battle of Chippewa, which occurred during the War of 1812. At the heart of the square you can admire a tall statue of General James Oglethorpe who was the founder of the state of Georgia. The square is home to several prominent Savannah landmarks including the Savannah Theatre (built in 1818), the First Baptist Church (which houses the oldest sanctuary in the city) and the Eastman-Stoddard House which is a beautiful Greek Revival style building which dates back to 1847.
