Looking for a small city that punches above its weight with charm, culture, and energy? You’ve got to check out Duluth. I’ve spent a few weekends here, and every time I go, I find something new to love—whether it’s strolling down the walkable streets downtown, catching a live show on the green, or grabbing dinner at one of the city’s standout local restaurants. Duluth blends that relaxed Southern feel with just enough buzz to keep things exciting, and it’s all just a quick hop from Atlanta.

Best Time to Visit

If you ask me, the best time to visit is from March through October. That’s when you get the best weather for outdoor festivals, food truck nights, and concerts under the stars. I’ve caught live music in the town square on a spring evening and walked through art festivals with crisp fall leaves swirling around me—it’s that kind of place. And even in winter, there’s a cozy, festive charm that makes the downtown lights feel extra magical.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive up I-85—it’s an easy 30-minute trip from downtown Atlanta (as long as you avoid rush hour!). Parking downtown is manageable, and you’re close to just about everything once you’re there.
  • By Air: When friends visit from out of town, they fly into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), which is about a 45-minute drive depending on traffic. Renting a car makes exploring Duluth and nearby spots super easy.
  • By Transit: MARTA buses and Gwinnett County Transit do run to Duluth, but honestly, I always recommend driving if you want the flexibility to explore local parks, restaurants, and the nearby Gas South District.

Where to Stay

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Atlanta NE Gwinnett Sugarloaf – I stayed here during a Gas South event weekend, and it was perfect. You get spacious suites, free breakfast, and an evening reception that’s actually worth attending. Great for families or anyone who wants a little extra space.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Duluth/Gwinnett Place – I’ve booked this one for a quick stay before—it’s modern, reliable, and close to everything. Great if you’re mixing business with a little downtime.
  • Sonesta Select Atlanta Duluth – This is a solid, budget-friendly option. It’s comfortable, clean, and puts you right near shops and dining options. If you’re planning to spend most of your time out and about, this place works great as a home base.
