Need a peaceful mountain town where you can unwind, explore, and still keep the kids entertained? Let me tell you about Cleveland, Georgia. Tucked into the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, this town has quickly become one of my favorite places to escape for a weekend. It’s got that small-town charm, gorgeous scenery, and plenty of ways to spend a day—from hiking trails and sipping wine to roadside fun that’ll make you smile. Whether you’re in the mood for adventure or just a quiet cabin stay, Cleveland is a perfect gateway to the mountains.

Best Time to Visit

If you’re wondering when to go, I recommend planning your trip in spring or fall—that’s when Cleveland really shines. From April to June, wildflowers line the trails and the weather is perfect for outdoor exploring. I also love visiting in fall (September to November), when the foliage turns the surrounding mountains into a colorful masterpiece. Summer is great too, especially if you want to spend your days kayaking, hiking, or enjoying cool evenings on a porch swing.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive up from Atlanta—it takes about 1.5 hours, and it’s a relaxing ride once you’re out of the city. Cleveland sits along US-129, just 20 minutes from Helen, so it’s easy to combine both in one trip.
  • By Air: The nearest major airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL). From there, I always rent a car—it’s the best way to enjoy the drive and explore the mountain towns along the way.
  • By Bus/Train: Public transit is limited in this area, so trust me—having your own vehicle is a must if you want to explore beyond town limits and into the mountains.

Where to Stay

  • Mtn Laurel Creek Inn & Spa – If you’re looking for a quiet, romantic retreat, this is it. I stayed here once on a couples’ weekend, and between the vineyard views, spa treatments, and peaceful setting, I left totally refreshed. It’s adults-only, which makes it extra serene.
  • Country Hideaway at Mountain Lakes – When I’m traveling with family or want cabin-style lodging with activities, this lakeside resort is a great choice. There’s space to spread out, places to hike or fish, and even pools and game rooms for the kids.
  • The Smith House (in nearby Dahlonega) – Just a short drive from Cleveland, this historic inn is packed with Southern charm. I’ve eaten in the dining room more than once—it’s famous for a reason—and staying overnight feels like stepping back in time (with modern comfort, of course).
