Founded in 1972 by Madison’s then-Mayor Bill Dyke to unite Dane County's urban and rural cultures, the Dane County Farmers' Market is the largest producers-only farmers’ market in the United States. The market is held on Saturday mornings from April to November on Madison’s Capitol Square and on Wednesday mornings on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. During the winter months, the market is held indoors at the Monona Terrace and between January and April, at the Madison Senior Center.

Over 300 vendors completely encircle Capitol Square, selling a broad range of fresh farm produce, meats, poultry and cheese, as well as baked bread and pastries, confectionery, handmade clothing, jewelry and arts and crafts.
