The Old Slave Mart Museum is a moving and informative place to visit as it is the first African American slave museum and tells the harrowing tales of the slave market. Founded in 1938, the museum is oftentimes staffed by men and women who can trace their lineage back to Charleston slaves. With as many as 40% of the slave market entering the country through Charleston, the Old Slave Mart Museum’s building is an eerie and heavy reminder of the people who were once shuffled through its walls. Guests can read informative posters that are scattered throughout the building, hear an interview with a former slave, and see haunting artifacts.
