Rainbow Row is an iconic landmark of Charleston that wasn’t always the beautiful and colorful historical site that it is today.
History: In fact, in its earlier days, Rainbow Row, which has homes dating back to the 1800s, was a rundown area and was largely considered to be a slum during the years that followed the Civil War. These conditions stayed the same until the early 1900s when members of the community started purchasing the houses. The neighborhoods conditions started to improve with the purchases, and many homeowners made the collective decision to paint their homes in eye-catching pastel colors due to the popular use of colonial Caribbean color schemes at the time. By 1945, the majority of the homes were restored. While the homes remain to be private properties, it’s certainly worth the time to take a stroll down Rainbow Row to see the unique colors and architectural styles of the buildings.
