If you’re craving a fun, outdoorsy getaway in the Mountain West, I always say—spend a weekend in Boise. I’ve had some great escapes here, and you’ll love how this Idaho capital blends nature, culture, and city energy so effortlessly. Whether you’re floating down the river, sampling local brews, or biking through leafy trails, Boise gives you just the right mix of adventure and small-town charm with big heart.

Boise, ID Highlights:

  • Boise River Greenbelt – I always bring my bike for this. You’ll cruise along 25 miles of scenic riverfront paths that link parks, coffee stops, and downtown spots—it’s such a relaxing way to explore.
  • Old Idaho Penitentiary – I took a tour on a whim and was hooked. You’ll walk through 19th-century prison blocks, hear some spooky stories, and learn surprising state history in one cool (and slightly eerie) spot.
  • Boise Art Museum – I stop in every time I’m downtown. You’ll find bold exhibitions and regional pieces, all in a beautiful modern space that’s as inspiring as the art inside.
  • Idaho State Capitol Building – I love wandering through here, especially in the quiet mornings. You’ll admire the architecture, and it’s open daily for free, self-guided tours—easy and impressive.
  • Boise Foothills – When I want fresh air and a view, I head to Camel’s Back or Table Rock. You’ll get sweeping views over the city and Treasure Valley, plus great hiking or biking trails to stretch your legs.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve found spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) to be perfect for Boise adventures. You’ll enjoy mild weather, changing colors, and fun festivals that fill the city with energy. Summer’s warm and sunny—great for river floats and patio dining—while winter is quieter, with snow sports just a short drive away if you’re into skiing or snowshoeing.

How to Get There

  • By Plane: I usually fly into Boise Airport (BOI)—it’s small, efficient, and just 10 minutes from downtown. You’ll find direct flights from major cities and quick access to the action.
  • If you are traveling by car: I’ve driven in via I-84, and it’s a beautiful route through high desert and valleys. You’ll be about 5 hours from Salt Lake City or 8 from Portland—well worth the road trip.
  • By Bus: Greyhound and local shuttles make it easy if you’re coming from nearby towns. I’ve also seen airport shuttles that’ll get you straight into the city without a hitch.

Where to Stay

  • The Grove Hotel – I stayed here on my first trip to Boise and loved how central it was. You’ll enjoy the spa, onsite dining, and easy access to the Greenbelt trails right outside the door.
  • Hotel 43 – If you’re after something stylish and central, I always recommend this one. You’ll be close to Boise’s restaurants, theaters, and shopping with a boutique touch.
  • Modern Hotel and Bar – I’ve hung out here even when I wasn’t staying. You’ll love the craft cocktails, creative menu, and artsy vibe—it’s one of the coolest spots in town, just steps from downtown.
