Need a quick New England day trip or a weekend that mixes adventure with charm? Let me point you to Manchester, Connecticut. Just east of Hartford, Manchester surprised me with how much it has to offer. You’ve got scenic trails, local art, historic neighborhoods, and a food scene that’s getting better every time I visit. Whether you’re into breweries, boutique shopping, or nature escapes, there’s something here that’ll keep you coming back.
Best Time to Visit
I usually plan my trips between May and October, and I think you’ll love it during that stretch too. The weather’s great for hiking, browsing outdoor markets, or sitting on a patio with a drink. There’s a nice rhythm to the town this time of year—festivals, music, and that easygoing, small-town summer vibe.
How to Get There
- If you’re driving: I’ve found Manchester super easy to reach—it’s right off I-84, only 15 minutes east of Hartford and about 2 hours from both Boston and NYC. Perfect for a weekend getaway or even a long day trip.
- By Bus: I’ve taken CTtransit from Hartford before—it’s frequent and convenient. If you’re coming from farther away, Greyhound and Peter Pan get you into Hartford, and it’s just a short hop from there.
- By Train: I’ve used Amtrak to Hartford a couple of times when I wanted to skip the drive. From there, it’s only 15 minutes by car or local transit to Manchester.
Where to Stay
- Homewood Suites by Hilton – I stayed here on a longer visit, and having the kitchen made everything easier. It’s perfect if you’re traveling with family or just want a bit more space to settle in.
- Fairfield Inn & Suites – When I’m looking for something modern and close to shops and restaurants, this is a solid choice. Clean, convenient, and comfortable—you can’t go wrong.
- Baymont by Wyndham – For something simple and affordable, this has been a great pick for me. You’ll have easy access to highways and can still get to local attractions in no time.
