Need a mountain escape filled with outdoor adventure and small-town charm? I always say—head to Buena Vista! Tucked into the stunning Arkansas River Valley and surrounded by the Collegiate Peaks, this Colorado gem has something for everyone. I’ve hiked, soaked, and rafted my way around town, and I keep coming back. Whether you're chasing adrenaline or just want to unwind with a view, Buena Vista brings the best of Colorado together in one beautiful spot.

Buena Vista, CO Highlights:

  • Buena Vista River Park: I love walking the riverside trails here—you can kayak, fish, or just sit by the water with a picnic. The mountain views are always a bonus.
  • Cottonwood Hot Springs: When I need to reset, this is where I go. You’ll soak in mineral-rich pools surrounded by trees and silence. It’s peaceful, rustic, and just what you need after a day outdoors.
  • Main Street Buena Vista: I always carve out time to explore downtown. You’ll find quirky shops, great coffee, and friendly locals—plus some amazing art tucked into cozy galleries.
  • Mount Princeton: You can hike it if you're feeling ambitious, but even if you just admire it from town like I often do, it’s a stunning presence on the skyline.
  • Arkansas River: I’ve rafted this stretch more than once, and it’s as thrilling as it is scenic. You can go full-on whitewater, try fly fishing, or just float gently—whatever fits your vibe.

Best Time to Visit Buena Vista, CO

From May through September, you’re looking at sunny days, rushing rivers, and vibrant festivals. That’s when I usually go. You’ll catch the town at its most lively—ideal for hiking, rafting, soaking in hot springs, or just breathing in that crisp mountain air.

How to Get to Buena Vista, CO

  • If you are traveling by car: I drive in on US Highway 24—it’s scenic and straightforward. Buena Vista’s about 2.5 hours southwest of Denver and 1.5 hours north of Salida.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into both Denver International (DEN) and Colorado Springs (COS). From there, I recommend renting a car—it’s a beautiful drive and gives you flexibility to explore.
  • By Bus: Bustang’s Outrider service is a great option if you’re coming from nearby towns like Salida or Gunnison. It’s reliable and budget-friendly.

  • Surf Hotel & Chateau: This is my top pick for a stylish stay right on the river. I love the design, the views, and how easy it is to walk downtown from here.
  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort: I’ve stayed in their cabins and soaked under the stars—it’s unforgettable. If you want hot springs right outside your door, this is the spot.
