Review & FAQ:
Spanning approximately 109 acres, Pitch Lake is the world's largest natural deposit of asphalt and one of only three such lakes in the world. Comprising a mixture of water and pitch, the surreal lake is sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Some spots are solid enough to walk across, while others resemble quicksand and still others are almost as fluid as pure water. A fascinating on-site museum contains various artifacts that have been unearthed from the pitch over the years, including giant sloth bones and an Amerindian bench carved in the shape of an animal.
