Romantic Getaways in Southern California

The golden coast has long been a haven for dreamers, sun-chasers, and lovers alike. Southern California, with its mix of dramatic coastlines, charming towns, and desert oases, offers some of the most unforgettable escapes for two. From wine-soaked weekends to barefoot sunsets on the beach, here are my go-to romantic getaways that I keep returning to.

1. Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in the California Hills
I couldn't believe how Cal-a-Vie Health Spa reminded us of a French coastal village transported to Southern California! Just 40 miles north of San Diego, this 450-acre wellness retreat makes you feel like you've traveled much further. There are terracotta rooftops, lavender-lined pathways, sun-washed stone buildings, and sweeping vineyard views.
The accommodations are intimate and refined with private villas and suites decorated with antique furnishings, exposed beams, and hand-selected European accents. Plush beds dressed in high-thread-count linens, deep soaking tubs, and private patios overlooking the hills create a cocoon of calm.
Cal-a-Vie is first and foremost a sanctuary for the mind, body, and spirit. You can immerse yourself in personalized fitness programs, daily yoga and meditation, nutritional workshops, guided hikes, and water therapies. The spa itself is world-class, offering treatments ranging from traditional massages and facials to innovative holistic therapies.
What makes Cal-a-Vie one of the best romantic getaways in Southern California is the highly personalized approach. Every stay is curated with custom wellness goals in mind, whether you’re seeking relaxation, detox, or rejuvenation. Gourmet meals are prepared with a focus on fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients—healthy, but never boring.
For me, the setting itself inspires reflection and renewal, even in a few nights you rejuvenate and unwind. Morning walks through vineyards, quiet afternoons by the pool, and evenings filled with California sunsets make it a deeply restorative escape.
Nearby, you can visit Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum and SEA LIFE Aquarium if you want something more active.

2. The Inn at Churon Winery
In the heart of Temecula Valley Wine Country about 1 hour north, The Inn at Churon Winery offers a boutique stay that feels equal parts vineyard escape and European countryside retreat. Perched on a hillside surrounded by rolling vines, this elegant inn is just an hour from San Diego or Orange County, making it an easy romantic getaway. I love visiting year-round!
The design embraces an Old-World, French chateau aesthetic with arched doorways, wrought-iron details, and warm Tuscan-inspired colors. There are just 24 guest rooms but they are amazing. I adored the plush king-sized bed (I went shopping for pillows as soon as I got home inspired by their decor!). I also loved the marble fireplace, oversized whirlpool tub, and a private terrace with countryside views.
The Inn at Churon stand out has a lovely intimate atmosphere combined with the perks of being on a working winery. You are welcomed with a glass of estate wine, and mornings begin with a complimentary hot breakfast served on the terrace with panoramic vineyard views.
I think that a stay here is best paired with exploration: tour the surrounding wineries, indulge in a private tasting at Churon’s own wine cave, or enjoy a sunset walk among the vines. The Inn is also just minutes from Old Town Temecula and the region’s hot-air balloon adventures.
My favorite moment was sipping a glass of the estate’s red blend from my private balcony at dusk, as the sun dipped behind the vineyards, a setting that felt both romantic and timeless.

3. Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort
Steps from the sand in Oceanside, Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort is one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets for travelers who want the freedom of RV life without giving up comfort. Family-owned and operated, the resort has been welcoming guests for decades with a perfect balance of coastal charm and modern amenities.
From San Diego, I drove about 45 minutes north to Oceanside, a city of roughly 175,000 residents with deep military and surf heritage.
The location is unbeatable: a private walkway leads directly to Buccaneer Beach, and the resort is minutes from Oceanside’s iconic pier, harbor, and vibrant downtown scene. You can swim, surf, picnic and relax with awesome ocean views!
What makes Paradise by the Sea special is its thoughtful blend of convenience and relaxation. The resort offers full hook-up sites, premium Wi-Fi, landscaped grounds with palm trees and flowers, and upgraded facilities including a heated pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplaces, and clean, modern bathhouses.
On top of being the most affordable romantic weekend getaway in Southern California, it’s also a family-friendly and pet-friendly destination, with seasonal activities, bike rentals, and nearby surf lessons. Guests love gathering for sunset around the fire pits or taking easy day trips to Legoland, San Diego Zoo, or Disneyland.
My favorite moment was waking up to the sound of the ocean, grabbing a coffee, and strolling the short path down to the beach just in time to catch surfers carving waves in the morning light.

4. The Ambrose Hotel
Just minutes from Santa Monica Beach and 30 minutes from downtown LA, The Ambrose Hotel is a boutique property that blends understated luxury with a distinctly Southern California vibe. Tucked into a quiet, leafy neighborhood, the hotel feels serene and residential while still being close to the city’s shopping, dining, and oceanfront attractions. Its design leans modern and eco-friendly, with warm natural woods, airy spaces, and inviting lounge areas filled with local artwork.
I recommend a two-night stay in a Deluxe King with Balcony, which features organic bedding, custom furnishings, a spa-inspired bathroom with rainfall shower, and a private balcony where you can enjoy the California sunshine.
Around the hotel, you’ll find a sun-filled library lounge, complimentary bicycles for exploring Santa Monica, and a fitness center. I loved the continental breakfast featuring fresh pastries, fruit, and locally roasted coffee. The hotel’s focus on sustainability—such as eco-friendly practices and energy-saving design—adds to its appeal for mindful travelers.
The Ambrose Hotel has a neighborhood feel. Unlike large resorts, it offers a boutique intimacy, personalized service, and a sense of calm after a day in the city. One thing to note: while there isn’t a full restaurant onsite, Santa Monica’s renowned dining scene is just a short walk or bike ride away.
Nearby, you can stroll along the Santa Monica Pier, shopp at Third Street Promenade, bike on the oceanfront path to Venice Beach, or hike in the Santa Monica Mountains.
My favorite moment was enjoying a quiet morning coffee on the balcony.

5. Nick’s Cove on Tomales Bay
Just over an hour from San Francisco, Nick’s Cove is a charming waterfront retreat set along the tranquil shores of Tomales Bay. This rustic-chic hideaway combines classic Northern California coastal charm with cozy luxury. You get to stay in an individually decorated cottage. You can ask for a wood-burning stove, clawfoot tub, and sweeping bay views. The design balances vintage nautical touches with natural woods, plush furnishings, and soft, inviting lighting.
I recommend booking a Waterfront Cottage, where French doors open to private decks overlooking the bay. Inside, we found deep soaking tubs, a fireplace, and cozy seating perfect for reading or relaxing by the water. The décor draws from the natural surroundings with a palette of blues, creams, and warm wood, making the space feel both warm and indulgent.
Nick’s Cove is best known for its iconic restaurant and oyster bar, serving locally sourced seafood, wood-grilled meats, and California wines. You can stroll along the pier to the boathouse, which doubles as a charming gathering spot. In-room massages were a personal highlight for me. You also get a complimentary continental breakfast delivered to your cottage, and easy access to kayaking, birdwatching, and coastal hiking trails.
One thing to keep in mind: cell service can be spotty in the area, which only adds to the unplugged, slow-living atmosphere.
Things to do nearby include exploring Point Reyes National Seashore, hiking Tomales Point Trail for wildflower and elk views, or visiting Hog Island Oyster Co. for a quintessential coastal California experience.
My favorite moment was sitting on the private deck at sunset.

6. Inn Paradiso in the Paso Hills - 3 hours 30 minutes from LA
About three hours from Los Angeles, Inn Paradiso is a hidden retreat in Paso Robles wine country that felt equal parts bohemian hideaway and luxurious boutique inn. Surrounded by ancient oak trees and rolling vineyards, the property combines mid-century modern style with rustic California charm. Interiors are filled with curated vintage furnishings, eclectic artwork, and warm wood accents, giving the inn a creative, soulful atmosphere.
I recommend a one- or two-night stay in the King Suite, which features soaring ceilings, handcrafted furnishings, and a private terrace with views of the surrounding countryside.
Rooms include organic linens, oversized soaking tubs, unique art pieces, and carefully chosen design details that make the space feel artistic yet serene. Many suites also have fireplaces, ideal for cozy evenings with a glass of local wine.
The inn itself offers a lounge-like great room, outdoor pool, landscaped gardens, and spaces to relax in the shade of ancient oaks. We had an artisanal breakfast made with local ingredients.
What makes Inn Paradiso one of the best romantic getaways in SoCal is its fusion of art, design, and tranquility. Every corner feels thoughtfully styled, yet it remains welcoming and comfortable.
Things to do nearby include touring Paso Robles’ renowned wineries, visiting Sensorio’s art installation, dining at Sabor & Sazón and other farm-to-table restaurants downtown, or taking a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast.

7. Sycamore Mineral Springs Spa and Resort, San Luis Obispo - 3 hours from LA
Just about three hours from Los Angeles, I found Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa to be a serene retreat tucked into the lush hillsides of San Luis Obispo. Known for its healing waters and wellness focus, the resort blends rustic California charm with modern comforts. You'll love the natural feel of sycamore trees, oak groves, and nearby vineyards.
I recommend booking a One-Bedroom Spa Suite, which includes a private balcony hot tub fed by natural mineral springs. The mineral-rich hot tub is the highlight, perfect for soaking under the stars. I think that amenities like fireplaces in select suites, and spa-inspired bath products made it extra special.
The resort offers a full-service spa with massages, facials, and body treatments, plus a yoga dome with daily classes, a meditation garden, and scenic walking trails through the property. Dining at the onsite Gardens of Avila restaurant features farm-to-table cuisine highlighting local Central Coast produce. Relaxing next to the resort’s heated pool and working out at the fitness center were a highlight.
What sets Sycamore apart is its focus on wellness and natural mineral springs. Unlike larger resorts, it provides an intimate, restorative escape centered on relaxation and healing. One tip: mineral spring tubs are very popular, so it’s wise to book spa appointments and additional tubs in advance, especially on weekends.
Things to do nearby include exploring the charming downtown of San Luis Obispo, wine tasting in Edna Valley, hiking Bishop Peak, or taking a short drive to Avila Beach and Pismo Beach for coastal views and seaside dining.
My favorite moment was slipping into the mineral hot tub on the private balcony at dusk.

8. Del Marcos Hotel, Palm Springs
Just two hours from Los Angeles, the Del Marcos Hotel is a mid-century modern gem located in the heart of Palm Springs. The property is adults-only, which meant a quiet and relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for our anniversary stay.
I recommend booking a Poolside King Room, which features retro-inspired furnishings, a spacious layout, and a private patio with direct access to the pool. I loved how the floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Thoughtful touches like complimentary breakfast, eco-friendly bath products, and cozy lounge chairs make the stay feel chic yet laid-back.
The hotel centers around a sparkling pool with ample loungers, shaded cabanas, and a relaxed social vibe. Grab complimentary bikes for exploring Palm Springs. Check out the daily happy hour if you want to say hi to other guests. I liked how close we were to downtown shops, art galleries, and restaurants especially since Del Marcos does not have a full-service restaurant onsite.
I like how Del Marcos Hotel is a thoughtfully preserved architectural landmark that feels stylish, friendly, and distinctly Palm Springs. One note: because it’s a smaller property, weekends can book up quickly, so plan ahead if you’re traveling during peak season.
Things to do nearby include strolling Palm Canyon Drive, riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for sweeping desert views, hiking Indian Canyons, or visiting the Palm Springs Art Museum.
My favorite moment was lounging by the pool at sunset as the desert sky turned shades of pink and orange behind the mountains.

9. Hotel Angeleno
From downtown Los Angeles, I drove about 25 minutes west (16 miles via I-10 and I-405) to Hotel Angeleno , a circular tower that has been an LA landmark since it was built in 1970 (famously shaped like a “wine glass” by architect Francis Heusel).
I thought that its location between Santa Monica and Beverly Hills makes it a convenient base for exploring the Westside, UCLA, and the beaches of LA.
I recommend booking a Premier King Room with View, which offers floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city skyline or the Getty as well! Rooms feature contemporary décor with clean lines, plush bedding, a work-friendly desk, and spa-inspired bathrooms. Thoughtful amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi, locally roasted coffee, and soft robes make the space feel modern yet welcoming.
We thought the hotel’s highlight was its rooftop restaurant and lounge, West, where you can enjoy California cuisine and cocktails with sweeping views of the city lights. Other features include an outdoor heated pool (it was fantastic!), 24-hour fitness center, and a courtesy shuttle that makes getting around the neighborhood easy so that you don't have to drive.
Things to do nearby include touring the Getty, shopping in Brentwood or Beverly Hills, catching a show at The Hollywood Bowl, or heading further west to Santa Monica Pier and the beaches.
One note: being near the freeway makes it easy to get around, though light traffic noise is possible in some rooms.

10. Hotel Santa Barbara
Just a short stroll from State Street, Hotel Santa Barbara is a historic boutique property that I think really captures the charm and elegance of California’s Riviera! Built in the 1920s and thoughtfully restored, the hotel blends Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with modern comforts, creating an inviting base for exploring downtown Santa Barbara, the Funk Zone, and the nearby beaches.
We stayed in a Deluxe King Room, which offers plush bedding, high ceilings, and a soothing coastal-inspired palette of creams and soft blues. Rooms are equipped with work-friendly desks, cozy seating areas, and spa-style bathrooms with updated fixtures.
I liked passing through the hotel with Spanish tile floors and wrought-iron accents. Take advantage of friendly concierge services that can help arrange wine tours or coastal excursions.
While it does not have a full-service restaurant onsite, you are steps from Santa Barbara’s renowned dining scene and cafés. A continental breakfast is served daily, adding to the inn’s boutique appeal.
I think Hotel Santa Barbara is one of the best romantic getaways in Southern California. Why? I think it really stood out with its blend of history, walkability, and understated charm. Unlike larger resorts on the waterfront, it offers a more intimate, centrally located stay with character and a strong sense of place. One tip: parking in downtown Santa Barbara can be limited, so the hotel’s valet option is especially convenient.
Things to do nearby include wine tasting in the Funk Zone, strolling Stearns Wharf, shopping along State Street, or visiting the historic Santa Barbara Mission and Botanic Garden.
My favorite moment was enjoying a morning walk down State Street to the beach.

Conclusion
What I love most about Southern California getaways is how versatile they are. One weekend I can be relaxing on the coast at a luxury resort, the next I’m in Joshua Tree under a blanket of stars while staying in an affordable cabin or RV.
Each destination feels unique and special, and I think that’s what makes SoCal one of the best spots for if you are a couple looking for unforgettable romantic experiences.
