The Leo Carrillo Ranch, also known as ‘Rancho de Los Kiotes’ (‘Ranch of the Spanish Daggers’), is a historic ranch in Carlsbad, California. Fondly called ‘Carlsbad's Sleeping Beauty’ the traditional working ranch was built as a weekend retreat for actor Leo Carrillo in the Spanish hacienda style in tribute to his ancestors who came to California in the 1700s. Designated as both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historic Landmark, the Leo Carrillo Ranch is open for the public to explore its many traditional abode buildings, spectacular gardens, and hiking trails.
The Leo Carrillo Ranch, or otherwise known as ‘Rancho De Los Kiotes’ was designed and built by actor Leo Carrillo in 1939 as a weekend retreat for himself and his friends. Designed in the style of Spanish hacienda estates on land that was once inhabited by the Luiseno people, the working ranch was built as a tribute to Leo’s ancestors who arrived in California in the 1700s. Resting on more than 2,500 acres of unspoiled land, the ranch slowly grew in size with a variety of other properties being added on over the years from the main adobe house to a small artist’s studio for his wife, Edith. Today, the Leo Carrillo Ranch is managed by the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. and is a unique educational and passive recreational resource and a popular tourist destination.
Once part of the original 2,538-acre working ranch and weekend retreat of actor and preservationist Leo Carrillo, the historic Leo Carrillo Ranch is an outstanding educational and recreational resource. The ranch features several beautifully preserved and restored historic structures, including numerous hand-crafted adobe buildings, a hacienda and reflecting pool, a visitor center, stables, barns, house tack shed, and a foundry. The property is bisected by the four-mile long Rancho Carrillo Trail, which can be enjoyed on self-guided walking tours or guided 90-minute walking tours on Saturdays. Visitors can watch a short introductory film about the property in the Visitor Center before setting off on their hike.
The Leo Carrillo Ranch offers a range of educational programs, field trips, and guided tours in and around the property with the aim of encouraging visitors of all ages to take an interest in the history of the ranch and the role it played in the development of the local community.
The Leo Carrillo Ranch is located in Carlsbad and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Guided walking tours of the property are available and explore the buildings and gardens around the property.
