Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a historic area featuring what still remains from Sacramento’s first settlement. In 1839, the Mexican government gave a land grant to John Sutter, who then used the land to set up the Central Valley’s first non-Native American settlement and develop agriculture. The area today is open for self-guided tours on a daily basis and sits in the middle of the city, providing a destination to see and learn a bit about the history of California. The large fort was carefully restored to look the same way it did during the 1840’s with original rooms.
