Visitors to Truckee who are looking for a scenic way to view the city from afar should take note of Donner Memorial Bridge, which was built in the 1920s near Donner Summit. Located on historic US Route 40, this bridge was originally created because as the use of cars became more commonplace, the original road was far to steep while travelling up and down the sides of the valley this bridge now spans. The Rainbow Bridge - Donner Summit Bridge also overlooks Donner Lake, which was the site for sourcing the materials used to build the bridge.
