Whenever I’m craving a stylish and artsy coastal escape in Orange County, I always head to Costa Mesa. You’ll find yourself shopping at world-class malls, soaking in bold performances at arts centers, and dining at restaurants that make you feel like you're in on a culinary secret. I love that you’re only minutes from the beach—perfect when you need a little sun after a morning of shopping or gallery-hopping. If you’re anything like me, you'll appreciate how Costa Mesa blends culture, fashion, and that laid-back California glow.
Costa Mesa, CA Highlights:
- South Coast Plaza: I recommend setting aside a few hours to shop here—it’s massive, upscale, and honestly, it always feels like a special treat.
- Segerstrom Center for the Arts: You should definitely catch a show here if you can. I’ve seen everything from Broadway tours to ballet, and the experience never disappoints.
- The LAB Anti-Mall: I stumbled upon this funky spot once, and now I always go back. You’ll find indie shops, creative bites, and an artsy vibe that’s hard to resist.
- Fairview Park: When I need some fresh air, this is where I go. You can hike, bike, or just sit and take in the scenic views. You’ll love how peaceful it feels.
- Orange County Fairgrounds: I’ve had a blast here during the OC Fair—think rides, concerts, and nonstop fun. Even off-season, you’ll find cool events and markets happening year-round.
Best Time to Visit
I usually plan my trips during the spring and summer (March through September). You’ll get that golden California sunshine, perfect for outdoor dining and beach hopping. If you can swing a visit in July or August, I suggest checking out the OC Fair—it adds a whole new energy to the city.
How to Get There
- If you’re driving: I find it super convenient to take I-405, SR-55, or SR-73—Costa Mesa’s right at the intersection, just about 40 miles south of LA.
- By Air: You’ll want to fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA). I’ve landed there many times—it’s small, quick to navigate, and only 10–15 minutes from all the action in Costa Mesa.
- By Train: If you’re like me and enjoy a scenic ride, hop on Amtrak or Metrolink to Irvine or Santa Ana Stations. From there, you can catch a ride into town without hassle.
Where to Stay
- Avenue of the Arts Costa Mesa – I stayed here once and loved the lakeside setting. If you enjoy modern rooms, a serene pool, and being near South Coast Plaza, this one’s for you.
- The Westin South Coast Plaza – You can walk straight from the hotel to the mall via footbridge—something I really appreciated. It’s sleek, peaceful, and perfect after a busy day.
- Ayres Hotel Costa Mesa/Newport Beach – I always suggest this to friends who want charm and space. With European décor and easy access to the coast, you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem.
