When I need a break from the city or just want a little Wild West flavor, I head to Camp Verde. It’s tucked away in central Arizona’s Verde Valley, and I’ve found it to be a hidden gem with a lot more to offer than you’d expect. I’ve wandered through ancient ruins, hiked peaceful trails, and even spent lazy afternoons by the river. Whether you’re curious about Native American history or just need a relaxing escape, I think you’ll fall for Camp Verde like I did.

Best Time to Visit

I always plan my visits between March and May or September and November—those months are perfect for mild weather and exploring outdoors without the Arizona heat. I’ve gone in the spring when wildflowers pop up along the trails, and in the fall for festivals and cooler hikes. Summer’s a bit hot for me, but if you don’t mind the heat, the town’s still full of charm. Winter’s quiet, with crisp days that make it nice for wandering without the crowds.

How to Get There

  • Driving in? I usually take I-17—Camp Verde’s super easy to reach, just about 1.5 hours north of Phoenix and 45 minutes south of Sedona. The drive is gorgeous, especially if you hit it during golden hour.
  • Flying in? I’ve flown into Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) and Flagstaff Pulliam (FLG) before—either one works. You’ll need a car afterward, but the road trip through the Verde Valley is half the fun.
  • Using local transit? I’ve seen intercity buses and shuttles that connect places like Cottonwood and Sedona to Camp Verde. It’s doable without a car, but I’d recommend having wheels if you want to explore at your own pace.

Where to Stay

  • Cliff Castle Casino Hotel – I stayed here once when I wanted a little entertainment after a day outdoors. The casino, bowling, and dining options make it super easy to wind down without leaving the property.
  • Comfort Inn Camp Verde – When I’ve traveled with family, this has been a reliable spot. It’s close to everything, comfy, and great for road trippers like us.
  • The Lodge at Cliff Castle – I love this place when I want something quieter and a little more rustic. The suites have that cozy, cabin feel that makes me want to stay an extra night (or two).
