When I wanted small-town charm with a dash of Gulf Coast culture, I found it in Elberta, Alabama. Tucked between Foley and the Florida state line, Elberta surprised me in the best way—with its German roots, offbeat art spots, and that peaceful, slow-paced vibe. You’re close to the beaches but far from the crowds, and that’s what makes it so special. If you're looking to unplug and enjoy something different, I think you’ll really love it here.

Best Time to Visit

In my experience, spring and fall are the sweet spots. I’ve been in March for local festivals and again in October for cool, crisp evenings and laid-back outdoor fun. You’ll catch the town at its liveliest during these months. That said, summer brings all the Gulf Shores beach action just a short drive away—and I love using Elberta as a quiet home base. Winters are mild, too, and perfect if you're just looking to relax in a quieter setting.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in on U.S. Highway 98—it’s an easy ride whether you’re coming from Mobile (about 45 minutes) or Pensacola (just 30 minutes). You’ll pass by scenic fields, little farm stands, and plenty of places worth pulling over for a photo.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into both Pensacola International Airport (PNS) and Mobile Regional Airport (MOB). Both are convenient, but I usually pick PNS for more flight options and a quicker drive into town.
  • By Bus: If you’re not driving, you can catch a regional bus to Foley or Gulf Shores, then grab a taxi or rideshare. It’s not the fastest route, but it gets you there without much stress.

Where to Stay

  • Point Clear Cottages – I stayed here once and still daydream about the porch views over Mobile Bay. It’s about 45 minutes north of Elberta, but totally worth the drive if you're after peace, charm, and a waterfront setting.
  • Nearby Gulf Shores/Orange Beach – When I want easy access to the beach and a few more amenities, I stay down in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. You’ll find everything from full-service resorts to cozy vacation rentals, and Elberta is just a short drive away.
  • Local Airbnbs & Guesthouses – I’ve also stayed in some lovely rural rentals right in Elberta. Think quiet porches, starry skies, and maybe even a backyard chicken or two. If you're looking for a relaxed, farm-style escape, this is the way to go.
