Romantic Getaways in Southern California

I think exploring Southern California by bike is the way to go

The golden coast has long been a haven for dreamers, sun-chasers, and lovers alike. After a whirlwind city week, slipping into the chill beach vibes of a SoCal beach town is just the ticket! Luckily, Southern California, with its mix of dramatic coastlines, charming towns, and desert oases, offers some of the most unforgettable escapes for two. From wine-soaked weekends to barefoot sunsets on the beach, I’m sharing my favorite ways to spend a cozy 48 hours on a romantic getaway in Southern California that I discovered as a local and keep returning to still today.

Discover wellness, enjoy peaceful spring days, and rejuvenate your body.
Cal-a-Vie Health Spa

1. Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in the California Hills, 40 minutes from San Diego

Cal-a-Vie Health Spa is one of our favorite weekend getaways in Southern California and honestly I couldn't believe how much it reminded us of a French coastal village transported to Southern California!

Just 40 miles north of San Diego, this 450-acre wellness retreat makes you feel like you've traveled much further. There are terracotta rooftops, lavender-lined pathways, sun-washed stone buildings, and even sweeping vineyard views!

I adored how our suite for two days, decorated with antique furnishings and curated European accents. The deep soaking tub was such a joy for soaking after a day of exploring. Next time on our anniversary I plan to splurge on a private villa with a patio overlooking the hills.

Cal-a-Vie is first and foremost a sanctuary for the mind, body, and spirit and I loved how you can immerse yourself in personalized fitness programs, daily yoga and meditation, nutritional workshops, guided hikes, and water therapies. The spa was my personal highlight and truly, offering treatments ranging from traditional massages and facials to innovative holistic therapies. Gourmet meals are another highlight, prepared with a focus on fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients—healthy, but never boring.

For me, the setting itself inspires reflection and renewal. Morning walks through vineyards, quiet afternoons by the pool, and evenings filled with California sunsets make it a deeply restorative escape and invite you to re-connect with your partner in a meaningful way.

Nearby, Alta Vista Botanical Gardens was another highlight for me, a true local gem where we enjoyed strolling through colorful flowers.

What makes Cal-a-Vie one of my favorite romantic getaways in Southern California is the highly personalized approach. Every stay is curated with custom wellness goals in mind, whether you’re seeking relaxation, detox, or rejuvenation.

The Inn at Churon Winery

2. The Inn at Churon Winery

I was a big fan of this unique wine country escape that was perfect for a long weekend away from the city. In the heart of Temecula Valley Wine Country about 1 hour north from San Diego, The Inn at Churon Winery offers a boutique stay that feels equal parts vineyard escape and European countryside retreat. Perched on a hillside surrounded by rolling vines, this elegant inn is just an hour from San Diego or Orange County, making it an easy romantic getaway. I love visiting year-round!

The design embraces an Old-World, French chateau aesthetic with arched doorways, wrought-iron details, and warm Tuscan-inspired colors. There are just 24 guest rooms but they are amazing. I adored my plush king-sized bed for three days (I went shopping for pillows as soon as I got home inspired by their decor!). I also loved the marble fireplace, oversized whirlpool tub, and a private terrace with countryside views.

The Inn at Churon has a lovely intimate atmosphere combined with the perks of being on a working winery. You are welcomed with a glass of estate wine, and mornings begin with a complimentary hot breakfast served on the terrace with panoramic vineyard views. The vibe is so relaxing yet you are never bored.

I think that a stay here is best paired with exploration: tour the surrounding wineries, indulge in a private tasting at Churon’s own wine cave, and I loved ending the days with a sunset walk among the vines, my personal highlight. The Inn is also just minutes from Old Town Temecula and the region’s hot-air balloon adventures if you want to see it all from the air we well.

My favorite highlight was sipping a glass of the estate’s red blend from my private balcony at dusk, as the sun dipped behind the vineyards, a setting that felt both romantic and timeless.

Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort: Coastal Ease in Oceanside

3. Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort

For something more casual and much very affordable, plan a romantic SoCal weekend getaway at Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort (or plan a whole week there for deeper relaxation!) Steps from the sand in Oceanside, I thought that Paradise by the Sea Beach RV Resort was one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets when I mover there. It's perfect for travelers who want the freedom of RV life without giving up comfort. Family-owned and operated, the resort has been welcoming guests for decades so that's a lot of history here too.

From Los Angeles, I drove 1 hour 40 minutes south to Oceanside, a city of roughly 175,000 residents with deep military and surf heritage.

The location is unbeatable: a private walkway leads directly to Buccaneer Beach, and the resort is minutes from Oceanside’s iconic pier, harbor, and downtown scene. You can swim, surf, picnic and relax with awesome ocean views!

What makes Paradise by the Sea special is its thoughtful blend of convenience and relaxation. The resort offers full hook-up sites, premium Wi-Fi, landscaped grounds with palm trees and flowers, and upgraded facilities including a heated pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplaces, and clean, modern bathhouses.

On top of being the most affordable romantic weekend getaway in Southern California, it’s also a family-friendly and pet-friendly destination, with seasonal activities, bike rentals, and nearby surf lessons. Guests love gathering for sunset around the fire pits or taking easy day trips. If you decide to bring the kids (yes, you can have a romantic trip with kids in tow with some careful planning!), there's Legoland, San Diego Zoo, or Disneyland nearby.

My favorite highlight was waking up to the sound of the ocean, grabbing a coffee, and strolling down the short path to the beach first thing in the morning.

Relax Naturally at The Ambrose Hotel

4. The Ambrose Hotel

I adored our stay at The Ambrose Hotel which had such a neighborhood feel and great location. Just minutes from Santa Monica Beach and 30 minutes from downtown LA, The Ambrose Hotel is a boutique property that's perfect for a romantic weekend getaway in Southern California.

I thought it was fantastic how it blends understated luxury with a distinctly Southern California vibe. Tucked into a quiet, leafy neighborhood, the hotel feels serene and residential while still being close to the city’s shopping, dining, and oceanfront attractions. Its design leans modern and eco-friendly, with warm natural woods, airy spaces, and inviting lounge areas filled with local artwork.

Our two-night stay in a Deluxe King with Balcony came with organic bedding, custom furnishings, a spa-inspired bathroom with rainfall shower, and a private balcony where you can relax and enjoy the California sunshine.

Around the hotel, you’ll find a sun-filled library lounge, complimentary bicycles for exploring Santa Monica, and a fitness center. I loved the continental breakfast featuring fresh pastries, fruit, and locally roasted coffee. The hotel’s focus on sustainability (such as eco-friendly practices and energy saving design) adds to its appeal for mindful travelers.

Unlike large resorts, it offers a boutique intimacy, personalized service, and a sense of calm after a day in the city which I found special. One thing to note: while there isn’t a full restaurant onsite, Santa Monica’s renowned dining scene is just a short walk or bike ride away.

Nearby, you can stroll along the Santa Monica Pier, shop at Third Street Promenade, bike on the oceanfront path to Venice Beach, or hike in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Inn Paradiso

5. Inn Paradiso in the Paso Hills - 3 hours 30 minutes from LA

I thought that Inn Paradiso was one of the best romantic getaways in Southern California when I moved there. About three hours from Los Angeles, Inn Paradiso is a hidden retreat in Paso Robles wine country that felt like part secret gem and part luxurious boutique inn.

We loved waking up surrounded by ancient oak trees and rolling vineyards and how the property combines mid-century modern style with rustic California charm. Interiors are filled with curated vintage furnishings, eclectic artwork, and warm wood accents, giving the inn a creative, soulful atmosphere that we adored.

Our King Suite for three nights, had soaring ceilings, handcrafted furnishings, and a private terrace with views of the surrounding countryside which was truly relaxing.

Rooms include organic linens, oversized soaking tubs, unique art pieces, and carefully chosen design details that make the space feel artistic yet serene. Many suites also have fireplaces, ideal for cozy evenings with a glass of local wine, just remember to ask for a fireplace when booking if you want one.

The inn itself offers a lounge-like great room, outdoor pool, landscaped gardens, and spaces to relax in the shade of ancient oaks. We had an artisanal breakfast made with local ingredients, a perfect way to start a romantic trip.

What makes Inn Paradiso one of the best romantic getaways in SoCal is its fusion of art, design, and tranquility. Every corner feels thoughtfully styled, yet it remains welcoming and comfortable.

I enjoyed having things to do nearby, including touring Paso Robles’ renowned wineries, visiting Sensorio’s art installation, dining at Sabor & Sazón and other farm-to-table restaurants downtown, or taking a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast.

Explore outdoor trails, enjoy mineral springs, and relax with family.
Sycamore Mineral Springs Spa and Resort

6. Sycamore Mineral Springs Spa and Resort, San Luis Obispo - 3 hours from LA

Sycamore Mineral Springs Spa and Resort is one of my absolute favorite SoCal resorts! Why? If you are like me, you'll love the natural feel of sycamore trees, oak groves, and nearby vineyards. Just about three hours from Los Angeles, I found Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa to be a serene retreat tucked into the lush hillsides of San Luis Obispo. I loved the healing waters and wellness focus of the resort, as well as its rustic California charm combined with modern comforts.

Our One-Bedroom Spa Suite for three nights had a private balcony hot tub fed by natural mineral springs, my personal highlight! The mineral-rich hot tub is absolutely perfect for for soaking under the stars. I think that amenities like a fireplace (in select suites!), and spa-inspired bath products made it extra special.

I loved how we were never bored and the weekend went by way too quickly. That's thanks to the resort offering a full-service spa with massages, facials, and body treatments, plus a yoga dome with daily classes, a meditation garden, and scenic walking trails through the property.

Food is some of the best resort food we've had! Dining at the onsite Gardens of Avila restaurant features farm-to-table cuisine highlighting local Central Coast produce. Relaxing next to the resort’s heated pool and working out at the fitness center were a highlight as well.

What sets Sycamore apart is its focus on wellness and natural mineral springs. Unlike larger resorts, it provides an intimate, restorative escape centered on relaxation and healing. One tip: mineral spring tubs are very popular, so it’s wise to book spa appointments and additional tubs in advance, especially on weekends and during holidays like Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends.

Things to do nearby include exploring the charming downtown of San Luis Obispo, wine tasting in Edna Valley, hiking Bishop Peak, or taking a short drive to Avila Beach and Pismo Beach for coastal views and seaside dining.

My favorite weekend highlight was slipping into the mineral hot tub on the private balcony at dusk.

Enjoy poolside lounging, see classic architecture, and have an easy weekend.
Del Marcos Hotel

7. Del Marcos Hotel, Palm Springs

I loved getting away to Palm Springs when I moved to California. Just two hours from Los Angeles, the Del Marcos Hotel is a mid-century modern gem located in the heart of Palm Springs. The property is adults-only, which meant a quiet and relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for our anniversary stay.

I recommend booking a Poolside King Room, which features retro-inspired furnishings, a spacious layout, and a private patio with direct access to the pool. I loved how the floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the San Jacinto Mountains during our three day stay. Thoughtful touches like complimentary breakfast, eco-friendly bath products, and cozy lounge chairs make the stay feel chic yet laid-back.

The hotel centers around a sparkling pool with ample loungers, shaded cabanas, and a relaxed social vibe. I loved how easy it is to combine exercise and relaxation. For example, you can grab complimentary bikes for exploring Palm Springs. Check out the daily happy hour if you want to say hi to other guests. I liked how close we were to downtown Palm Springs shops, art galleries, and restaurants especially since Del Marcos does not have a full-service restaurant onsite.

I really like how Del Marcos Hotel is a thoughtfully preserved architectural landmark that feels stylish, friendly, and distinctly Palm Springs. One note: because it’s a smaller property, weekends can book up quickly, so plan ahead if you’re traveling during peak season.

Things to do nearby include strolling Palm Canyon Drive, riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, hiking Indian Canyons, or visiting the Palm Springs Art Museum.

My favorite moment was lounging by the pool at sunset as the desert sky turned shades of pink and orange behind the mountains.

Catch Iconic Views at Hotel Angeleno, Los Angeles
Hotel Angeleno

8. Hotel Angeleno

No post about SoCal romantic getaways would be complete for me without mentioning something close to LA and I thought Hotel Angeleno was the perfect local gem!

From downtown Los Angeles, I drove about 25 minutes west (16 miles via I-10 and I-405) to Hotel Angeleno, a circular tower that has been an LA landmark since it was built in 1970 (famously shaped like a “wine glass” by architect Francis Heusel).

I thought that its location between Santa Monica and Beverly Hills makes it a convenient base for exploring the Westside, UCLA, and the best beaches of California.

I recommend booking a Premier King Room with View, which offers floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city skyline or the Getty as well! Rooms feature contemporary décor with clean lines, plush bedding, a work-friendly desk, and spa-inspired bathrooms. Thoughtful amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi, locally roasted coffee, and soft robes make the space feel modern yet welcoming.

We thought the hotel’s highlight was its rooftop restaurant and lounge, West, where you can enjoy California cuisine and cocktails with views of the city lights. Other features include an outdoor heated pool (it was a fantastic way to cool off in July!), 24-hour fitness center, and a courtesy shuttle so that you don't have to drive.

To book, check availability or prices for Hotel Angeleno.

Things to do nearby include touring the Getty, shopping in Brentwood or Beverly Hills, catching a show at The Hollywood Bowl, or heading further west to Santa Monica Pier and the beaches.

One note: being near the freeway makes it easy to get around, though light traffic noise is possible in some rooms.

Explore cultural sights, visit historic attractions, and walk along city streets.
Hotel Santa Barbara

9. Hotel Santa Barbara

Just a short stroll from State Street, Hotel Santa Barbara is a historic boutique property that I think really captures the charm and elegance of California’s Riviera! Built in the 1920s and thoughtfully restored, the hotel blends Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with modern comforts, creating an inviting base for exploring downtown Santa Barbara, the Funk Zone, and the nearby beaches.

We stayed in a Deluxe King Room for three days, which offers plush bedding, high ceilings, and a soothing coastal-inspired palette of creams and soft blues. Rooms are equipped with work-friendly desks, cozy seating areas, and spa-style bathrooms with updated fixtures.

I liked passing through the hotel with Spanish tile floors and wrought-iron accents. Take advantage of friendly concierge services that can help arrange wine tours or coastal excursions.

While it does not have a full-service restaurant onsite, you are steps from Santa Barbara’s renowned dining scene and cafés. A continental breakfast is served daily, adding to the inn’s boutique appeal.

I think Hotel Santa Barbara is one of the best romantic getaways in Southern California. Why? I think it really stood out with its blend of history, walkability, and understated charm. Unlike larger resorts on the waterfront, it offers a more intimate, centrally located stay with character and a strong sense of place. One tip: parking in downtown Santa Barbara can be limited, so the hotel’s valet option is especially convenient.

Things to do nearby include wine tasting in the Funk Zone, strolling Stearns Wharf, shopping along State Street, or visiting the historic Santa Barbara Mission and Botanic Garden.

To book, check availability or prices for Hotel Santa Barbara.

My favorite moment was enjoying a morning walk down State Street to the beach.

Conclusion

What I love most about Southern California getaways is how versatile they are. One weekend I can be relaxing on the coast at a luxury resort, the next I’m under a blanket of stars while staying in an affordable cabin or RV.

Each destination feels unique and special, and I think that’s what makes SoCal one of the best spots if you are a couple looking for unforgettable romantic experiences.
