If you love small-town charm, deep history, and those friendly Midwest vibes, I think you should visit Ripon, Wisconsin! I always enjoy the peaceful energy of this little college town. Whenever I’m craving quiet streets, local flavor, and a bit of history, I come here. You can explore the birthplace of the Republican Party, browse cute local shops, and take in the countryside views that I never get tired of. When I need a low-key getaway that still feels meaningful, Ripon never lets me down.

When I Think You Should Visit

In my experience, the best times to visit Ripon are in the spring (April–June) and fall (September–October). I love watching the blooms come in during spring, and the fall colors here are some of my favorites. You’ll also find seasonal festivals and perfect weather for exploring. If you prefer summer, I’ve been during that time too—warm days, fun local events, and plenty of outdoor activities make it a great option.

How I Get to Ripon (And How You Can Too)

  • By Car: I usually drive in via Highway 23—it’s about 30 minutes west of Fond du Lac. If you’re coming from Milwaukee or Madison like I sometimes do, it’s around a 1.5-hour trip.
  • By Plane: I’ve flown into Appleton International Airport (ATW) before—it's about an hour’s drive. You can also consider General Mitchell in Milwaukee (MKE), which I’ve used a few times. That’s around 1.5 hours out.
  • By Bus: Just a heads-up—bus service is limited in this region. I always find driving to be the easiest and most flexible way to get around Ripon and nearby towns.

Where I Recommend Staying

  • Boarders Inn & Suites by Cobblestone Hotels – I’ve stayed here for the comfort and convenience. You’ll get free breakfast, modern rooms, and it’s just a short drive from downtown.
  • Mapes Hotel – If you like boutique style, I recommend this spot right on Watson Street. I loved being able to walk straight to shops and restaurants from my room.
  • Heidel House Hotel and Conference Center (Green Lake, 10 min) – I’ve stayed here when I wanted a scenic escape with a few more resort-style perks. You’ll get lakeside views, spa time, and good dining, all just minutes from Ripon.

Top Attractions I Think You’ll Enjoy

  • Ripon College – I always enjoy walking the campus. You can catch a lecture, a performance, or check out local art exhibits. It has that classic small-college charm.
  • Downtown Ripon – I’ve spent entire afternoons browsing the boutiques, sipping coffee, and admiring the galleries on historic Watson Street. You’ll love the laid-back pace.
  • South Woods Nature Preserve – When I want to stretch my legs and breathe in some fresh air, this urban forest is my go-to. It’s peaceful, great for birdwatching, and always leaves me feeling grounded.
  • Ripon Historical Society Museum – I’ve learned a lot here over the years. It’s a great stop if you’re curious about Ripon’s past, with rotating exhibits and a strong local focus.
