Another one of the most iconic tourist locations in the entire world, the Great Sphinx of Giza is instantly recognizable from films, history classes, and the glossy pages of travel magazines.

This giant limestone structure depicts a sphinx, a legendary creature that is part human and part lion, which despite millennia of erosion from wind and sand still maintains many clear features. Traces of the original paint can even be seen on parts of its face. No one knows exactly who built the Sphinx or why, but a trip to this site, directly next to the Giza Pyramid Complex, will provoke the imagination into creating theories of your own.
