Review & FAQ:
Set on Hissar Hill on the eastern part of Stara Planina mountain in the municipality of Karnobat in the Burgas Province is the site of the former frontier Byzantine and Bulgarian stronghold, Markeli Fortress. It is believed to have been built during Byzantine rule of Anastasius I and Justinian, to help protect the sole road to the Rishki and Varsbishki passes. Remnants of the old fortification are all that are left.
