Spezial Brewery was first mentioned in 1536 and has been in the Merz family since 1898. Current brewmaster, Christian Merz is the 4th generation to carry on the tradition of handcrafting smoked beer. Only regional products are used in the brewing process. This small brewery produces around 6000 hl per annum of beer, including amber lagers, dark malty beers and a strong Christmas beer which contains 7% alcohol. The brewery has established a 15-room guest house in another old brewery which was extensively renovated. It is centrally situated and within walking distance of downtown Bamberg and transport links.
