Review & FAQ:
A document dating from the reign of Charlemagne in 799 AD first mentions The Castle of Linz, and portions of the original still stand. Rudolf II later rebuilt the castle in the 17th century, and today it houses the Upper Austria Provincial Museum. Visitors can explore the halls and learn about the region’s nature, culture, and history from as far back as the Neolithic Age. A fire damaged part of the castle’s southern wing in 1800. In 2009, the museum replaced the destroyed section with glass and steel architecture, a nod to the city’s industrial enterprises.
