As the country’s largest church, The New Cathedral is 5,170 square meters and can seat up to 20,000 people. Construction of the Roman Catholic cathedral began in 1862 and completed in 1924. Today, the French Gothic-style building continues to impress. Carved wood adorns the building’s interior. Stained-glass windows illustrate the history of Linz with likenesses of prominent sponsors. Modern art now hangs in sections of the windows damaged during World War II. The New Cathedral’s crypt also has one of the largest nativity scenes which measures 12 meters. On Sundays, church-goers can enjoy the powerful Rudigier organ echoing through the church spire.
