When I needed a mix of family fun, lakeside views, and easy access to nature, I made my way to Syracuse, Utah. You’ll love how peaceful it feels here—right near the eastern edge of the Great Salt Lake, but still close enough to everything. I found myself spending quiet mornings on nearby trails, afternoons spotting bison on Antelope Island, and evenings catching sunsets that honestly surprised me with how gorgeous they were. If you’re after a low-key escape with plenty to do outdoors, this is the place for you.
Best Time to Visit
I’ve found May through October to be the sweet spot for visiting Syracuse. You’ll get warm days perfect for hiking and biking, and the trails around Antelope Island are absolutely worth your time—especially if you’re into wildlife watching. I’ve seen everything from bison to birds. Don’t skip the sunsets either. They paint the sky in oranges and purples right over the lake, and I always make time for at least one evening out just to soak it in.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in via Highway 108. It’s about a 30-minute trip north from Salt Lake City and just west of Layton and Clearfield. Super easy drive, and the scenery on the way isn’t bad either.
- By Air: If you're flying in, Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is your best bet. I’ve rented a car there and driven up in under an hour without any hassle.
- By Transit: If you’re not driving, UTA has you covered with bus and FrontRunner rail service. I’ve used the park-and-ride options in Layton before—it’s a smooth connection into the area.
Where to Stay
- Hampton Inn & Suites Ogden – I liked this spot for the comfort and the views—you're only about 20 minutes out, and those mountain backdrops make mornings feel like a postcard.
- Best Western Plus Layton Park Hotel – When I wanted easy access to dining and stores, this was my go-to. You’ll be right near shopping in Layton, which is super convenient.
- Tru by Hilton Clearfield Hill Air Force Base – I’ve stayed here for quick trips—it’s bright, casual, and great if you're bringing the family or just want something clean and simple nearby.
