If you’re looking for mountain views, city comforts, and outdoor adventure just steps away, I’d suggest heading to Sandy, Utah. Every time I visit, I’m amazed by how easy it is to go from trail to dinner—or from a ski run to a concert. You’ll love how close it is to Salt Lake City while still giving you that outdoorsy feel. Whether you're traveling with family or planning an active weekend, Sandy really does have a bit of everything.

Sandy, UT Highlights:

  • Catch a game or concert at America First Field: I’ve cheered for Real Salt Lake here, and I’ve caught a concert too—it’s an awesome stadium experience. You’ll feel the energy from the crowd the moment you step in.
  • Hike or bike Dimple Dell Regional Park: I spent a quiet morning here biking along canyon trails, and I think you’ll really enjoy how peaceful and accessible it is. You’d never guess you’re still in the city.
  • Shop and dine at The Shops at South Town: When I needed a break from the outdoors, I wandered through here—grabbed a bite, did some shopping, and even caught a movie. You’ll appreciate the variety all under one roof.
  • Visit the Mountain America Expo Center: I’ve been to a couple of events here—from seasonal expos to local shows—and I’m always impressed. If you’re in town during one, it’s definitely worth checking out.
  • Enjoy stunning views from the Bell Canyon Trail: This hike is one of my favorites. You’ll work up a sweat on the incline, but once you reach the waterfall or an overlook, the views of the Wasatch Mountains make it all worth it.

Best Time to Visit Sandy, UT

Depending on what you’re into, I’d say go in spring through fall (April to October) if you’re after hiking, mountain biking, or events. I’ve done a few autumn hikes around here—the foliage is gorgeous and the trails are quieter. But if skiing’s your thing, then December to March is the time to go. You’ll be close to some of Utah’s best ski resorts without staying right on the mountain.

How to Get to Sandy, UT

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually hop off I-15 and I’m in Sandy within minutes. It’s just a quick 20-minute drive south of Salt Lake City or about 25 minutes from the airport—super convenient either way.
  • By Bus: If you’re staying nearby or don’t want to drive, UTA buses are a solid option. I’ve used them to get around the suburbs without any trouble.
  • By Train: I really like the TRAX light rail—it connects Sandy directly with downtown Salt Lake and even the airport. If you want an easy and affordable way to move around, this is it.
