Need a gateway to stunning red rock landscapes? Head to Hurricane, Utah! I’ve used Hurricane as a base more than once—it’s one of those places where the scenery grabs your attention, but the small-town charm keeps you coming back. Whether you're hiking through sandstone canyons, biking slickrock trails, or unwinding by the lake, Hurricane offers the perfect mix of big adventure and a laid-back vibe that I think you’ll love.
Best Time to Visit
If you’re like me and prefer mild weather for outdoor adventures, plan your visit in the spring or fall. I’ve hiked here in April and biked in October—both times were perfect. It’s warm enough to get out early, but not so hot that you’re scrambling for shade. And if Zion is on your list (and it should be), these months are ideal for beating both the heat and the crowds.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in from Las Vegas—it’s only about 2 hours, and the views along I-15 are incredible as you get closer. If you’re coming from Salt Lake City, expect a scenic 4.5-hour drive down.
- By Air: I’ve flown into St. George Regional Airport (SGU) when I wanted something quick—it’s only 30 minutes away. For more flight options, Las Vegas McCarran (LAS) is a great alternative, and the drive from there is part of the fun.
- By Shuttle: There are a few reliable shuttle services from Las Vegas and St. George that can drop you in Hurricane or even take you straight to Zion. It’s a great option if you’d rather not rent a car.
Where to Stay
- Wingate by Wyndham Hurricane/Zion National Park – I stayed here on a weekend trip and really appreciated the location. The rooms were clean, the breakfast was a nice perk, and I loved being close to both Zion and Sand Hollow.
- Sand Hollow Resort – If you’re into golf or off-roading, this place is your dream. I’ve spent a night here and it’s both luxurious and adventure-ready—great for couples or groups looking for something a little upscale.
- Hurricane Hideaway Lodging – For something quiet and budget-friendly, I liked this spot. It’s simple, comfortable, and gives you that small-town atmosphere that makes Hurricane feel so welcoming.
