The history of airport code GEG, Spokane International Airport, stretches back to the early 20th century. Back then, the land on which the airport would eventually be built was home to a small airfield called Sunset Field. This airfield was bought by the United States Department of War in 1941 and renamed Geiger Field in honor of Major Harold Geiger, an army officer and aviation expert who tragically died in a plane crash in the 1920s.

Like many other airports and airfields all around the United States, GEG was used as a military training base during the Second World War, with B-17 bomber pilots training there and various aviation engineers and workers also operating at the airfield. Geiger Field closed down when the war ended and the land and facilities were handed over to Spokane County authorities who decided to turn the space into a commercial airport.

In 1946, GEG became the main airport for the city of Spokane, replacing the city's former main airport: Felts Field. It wasn't actually known as Spokane International Airport until 1960, with the airport code GEG coming from the 'Geiger' part of the airport's former name. From the 60s through to the 70s and up into the modern era, GEG has seen various expansions and developments as the city has grown and more people have begun traveling by air.
