If you’re drawn to Southern charm, equestrian elegance, and historic streets, I always say—spend a weekend in Aiken, South Carolina. I’ve walked its tree-lined avenues, watched polo matches with a glass of sweet tea, and felt that timeless, genteel vibe the moment I arrived. Whether I’m dining downtown or wandering through shaded gardens, Aiken never fails to slow me down in the best way.

Aiken, SC Highlights:

  • For Families: Visit Hopelands Gardens – I’ve strolled these peaceful paths under centuries-old oaks and watched turtles sunbathe by the pond. It’s the kind of spot where you slow down, breathe deep, and maybe even bring a picnic.
  • For Outdoor Enthusiasts: Hike or ride in Hitchcock Woods – I’ve wandered through these trails on foot and horseback, and it’s truly one of my favorite escapes. You’ll find serenity just minutes from downtown—it’s a hidden gem of urban forest.
  • For Kids: Explore the Aiken County Historical Museum – I’ve visited with family, and the exhibits are surprisingly fun and hands-on. It’s set inside a beautiful old mansion, which adds to the experience.
  • For an Adventure: Attend a live polo match – I’ve sat on the sidelines at Whitney Field, and it’s as classic-Aiken as it gets. Whether you’re dressed up or in your weekend jeans, you’ll love the tradition and excitement.
  • For Shoppers: Browse downtown boutiques – I always carve out time for Laurens Street. From antiques and Southern-style fashion to gourmet chocolates, you’ll find something to bring home—or just enjoy browsing like I do.

Best Time to Visit Aiken, SC

I’ve found that spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are the perfect seasons to visit. The weather is ideal, and there’s always something going on—equestrian events, garden tours, or a weekend festival. Summer’s hotter, but I’ve still enjoyed evening concerts and catching sunsets with a cool drink in hand.

How to Get to Aiken, SC

  • By Car: I usually drive in via US-1 or US-78—it’s just 30 minutes from Augusta, and about 2.5 hours from either Charleston or Atlanta. The drive is scenic and easy either way.
  • By Air: I fly into Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) when I want to be close—it’s just about 35 minutes away. Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is another great option, around an hour’s drive.
  • By Train/Bus: If you’re coming in without a car, Amtrak and regional bus services through Columbia or Augusta are your best bet. I’ve done this route before and it’s totally doable with a little planning.
