Originally opened by Walter and Maude Hartwig, well known in the theatre community for helping to spread theatre outside of its usual confines of New York City and into the rest of the country, many big names have graced the stage including Ethel Barrymore, Steve McQueen and Walter Matthau. The playhouse is also run and managed by a nonprofit foundation that seeks to help maintain the history of the theatre and its impact on Ogunquit. Top notch musicals are always brought in to entertain not only locals but also those who travel from miles away to experience this beautiful, historic and unique theatre.

Permanent Activities and Events

One of the main features of the Playhouse is their focus on children’s theatre. The main focus is on their three theatre camps - separated by age range for optimal experience for each child.

1.Rising Stars, their camp for children from 5 years old to 8 years old, seeks to introduce children to the exciting world of theatre arts in ways that are both fun and also educational. Focusing on teaching ways for children to learn to work as an ensemble, the Rising Stars camp helps teach them basic skills for theatre. The camp runs for three hours during the week, finishing up with a performance at the end for families to attend and see what their child has learned during the week!

2. Center Stage, their camp for children from 8 years old to 10 years old, helps take the skills the children learned from the Rising Stars camp and expands on them - teaching vocal skills as well as additional movement and acting tips and techniques. Less focused on the ensemble and more on the individual child actor, this camp helps children become more comfortable in the spotlight. This camp runs for a slightly longer period of time, for six hours during the week, and also finishes up with a performance for friends and families.

3. Junior Players, their camp for children from 9 years old to 16 years old, is their most advanced offering. Working with each individual child’s strengths and weaknesses in order to help them grow as actors, this camp expands into dance, choreography, improv skills and staging. Running for six hours during the week and finishing up with two full scale performances after a live dress rehearsal, this camp is great for children who want to be better actors or those who would like to pursue a career in theatre.

The theatre also offers backstage tours, offering guests the opportunity to see behind the scenes to find out how the theatre works! There is a small cost for the 90-minute tour, which includes the tour, learning about the history of the playhouse, a visit to the dressing rooms of some of the stars who have graced the stage there (among them, Betty Davis!), and a stop in the green room, the wig room, and the sound room.

Special Events

Besides the many touring productions that come through the playhouse, the venue also offers special Q&A sessions after certain shows, allowing guests to ask questions of the cast of each specific play or musical and hear answers in their own words. This special event is free with a paid ticket to the show. Check the website ahead of time to find out which shows will offer these Q&A sessions.

Another special event offered here is the Teens and Tweens Night, allowing significantly discounted admission for those ages 12 to 19 with a paid adult ticket. Check the website for participating shows and make sure to check age related guidelines for those on the younger side of the age range.

One other event hosted on site is the Brew Fest, featuring hand crafted brews, celebrities and fun! Check the website for more information and join in and drink a beer to help support local theatre while spending quality time with friends and family!
