They have been around since 1963, when Portillo’s was one small hot dog shack called the Dog House. They come on a delicious steamed poppy seed bun and are dressed with mustard, relish, chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, kosher pickle, and peppers.

Then they added Italian roast beef smothered in gravy, a milk shake with bits of cake in it, and chocolate cake to the menu, and the rest is history. Of course, today the menu has hundreds of items, hot dogs come in all sizes, varieties, and dressings, and there are charcoaled burgers and all kinds of salads, but people are still coming to Portillo’s for their great Chicago hot dogs.
