Located at the Carlisle Barracks, now home to the U.S. War College, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School was established in 1879 in an attempt to assimilate Indian children into colonial culture. The school served as a model for a further 23 such schools.

It was an initiative caused a lot of suffering. Interested parties can visit the remaining school buildings using a self-guided tour brochure or try and join one of the occasional guided tours offered by the Cumberland County Historic Society. The site is also home to a cemetery where 186 students who died at the school were buried.
