Review & Frequenly Asked Questions:
A historical gem of New York, Castle Williams earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was also recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1938 for its important contributions to the National Historic Landmark District. Completed in 1811, Castle Williams was actually designed by Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Willian of the US Army Corps of Engineers and was considered to be one of the most state-of-the-art defenses of its kind at the time it was constructed. Due to its position on the New York Harbor, it was a pivotal part of New York’s naval defense network until it was retired. Today, Castle Williams stands as an icon of the harbor and is open to guided tours during the summer.
