The Swain County Visitor’s Center and Heritage Museum is located in an historic courthouse building which dates back to 1908. The museum endeavors to educate visitors about the early pioneer days in Swain County, relating the story by means of photographs, documents and various exhibits. There is also a short introductory video, to give visitors and overview of the county’s history. Among the highlights of the museum is a restored log cabin porch, desks from a typical one-room schoolhouse and a church organ which is almost 140 years old. There is a play area for children and a bookshop and Visitor’s Information office.
