Located on Taylor Creek, opposite the North Carolina Maritime Museum, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center keeps alive the ancient craft of hand-building boats. The center is a working boat-building operation which demonstrates the extraordinary skills of boat builders. The center has a large viewing platform from which visitors can observe all the steps required to transform some lumber into a graceful maritime vessel. There is also a large glass wall which allows you to watch members of the Maritime Model Society crafting perfectly scaled model boats. If you would like to try your hand at boat building you can sign up for one of the courses on offer at the center.
