Hayesville made me feel like I’d stepped into a quieter, more peaceful corner of the world. If you’re looking to slow down and get off the beaten path in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’re going to love it here. I come here when I need to recharge. You can find some great hiking, but I also recommend checking out the local history museum—it’s small but full of charm. I’ve got a few more favorites I always point friends toward when they’re heading this way.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve found the best time to visit Hayesville is from spring through fall (April–October). You’ll catch wildflowers in the spring, and I’ve spent plenty of summer days hiking, paddling on the lake, or browsing a local festival. If you come in fall, you’ll see mountain foliage that truly stuns—plus some great harvest events. I’ve visited in winter, too, but I’ll be honest—it’s very quiet, with the occasional snowfall and not much going on.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually take U.S. Route 64 to get into Hayesville. You’ll be about 2 hours from Asheville or 2.5 from Atlanta. It’s a peaceful drive.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into Asheville Regional (AVL) and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) before heading out by car—both are within a 2–3 hour drive.
  • By Scenic Drive: If you’re up for it, I highly recommend taking the Cherohala Skyway or Blue Ridge Parkway. I’ve done them both, and they turn your travel day into part of the experience.

Where to Stay

  • The Ridges Resort on Lake Chatuge – It’s technically in Hiawassee, but I love the lakeside setting and marina access. You’ll want to unwind here like I do.
  • Vacation Rentals – I often go this route when I want something quiet. You’ll find lakeside cottages, mountain-view homes, and even farm stays that feel like your own hidden retreat.
