If you're in the mood for a quick city break packed with culture, shopping, and food from every corner of the globe, I think you’ll love Elizabeth. I’ve explored the Revolutionary War sites, filled my suitcase at The Mills at Jersey Gardens, and still found time to enjoy incredible meals—without leaving town. You’ll be amazed at how much variety is packed into this place. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend escape, Elizabeth gives you a dynamic mix of old and new, just minutes from New York City. I’ve done it, and you’ll be glad you did too.

Best Time to Visit

I usually aim for April through October—you’ll get that sweet spot of mild weather, perfect for walking tours or browsing the outlet malls. If you're like me and enjoy festivals, you’ll find a few good ones sprinkled through spring and fall. But honestly? I’ve also made a special trip in November just to knock out my holiday shopping. The Mills at Jersey Gardens goes all out, and it’s worth it if you love deals and festive vibes.

How to Get There

  • Driving in? I’ve taken the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway—super easy. It usually takes me about 30 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. If you’re coming from Philly, you’re looking at roughly 1.5 hours.
  • Prefer the train? I’ve used NJ Transit to Elizabeth Station a few times. It connects easily to Newark and New York Penn Stations—makes the trip feel seamless.
  • Flying in? Newark Liberty International (EWR) is practically next door. I’ve landed, picked up my bag, and been downtown in 10 minutes. You’ll love how easy that is.

Where to Stay

  • Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel – This is my pick when I want something stylish and close to everything. The free shuttle is a huge bonus, and you’ll appreciate how quickly you can get into downtown Elizabeth or even head into the city.
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Newark Elizabeth/Liberty International Airport – I stayed here on a longer visit—it’s right by the outlet mall, so if you plan to shop (like I did), it’s perfect. You get more space and a kitchen too, which I always appreciate on multi-day trips.
