With several locations in and around Kansas City, it’s no surprise that the crimson roof and sculpture of a man in a top hat have become symbolic of incredible barbecue. Established in 1946 by the Gates family, the restaurant serves their signature barbecue cafeteria style at every location. Long lines are a common occurrence at Gates BBQ, especially during the weekends, but don’t be discouraged. There’s plenty of food to go around.

Hickory-wood fire is the key ingredient in the signature meaty offerings at Gates BBQ, but what really has people coming back for more is the house barbecue sauce. Today, two versions of the sauce are served, the tangy classic that got people hooked to begin with and the sweet variation for those who want a little less tang in their sauce. The beef brisket is the unquestionable favorite at Gates BBQ, while the beef on bun sandwiches also receive high praise from regulars.
