The St. Charles Historic District preserves the first European settlement along the Missouri River, and marks the site of the final outpost where explorers Lewis and Clark gathered their last supplies before heading off on their famous expedition. Over 100 buildings spanning nearly 75 acres are included in the nationally registered historic district. The site is a major stop on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Buildings in the district include 19th and 20th century homes and businesses representing late Victorian, Italiante and Greek Revival architectural styles, among others. The settlement was founded in 1769 as a trading outpost and was Missouri’s first state capital until 1826.
