Looking for riverside charm, outdoor adventure, and that upbeat college town energy? I always tell people—head to Big Rapids, Michigan! Tucked along the Muskegon River and home to Ferris State University, this town blends recreation, local arts, and good old-fashioned Midwest hospitality. Whether you’re road-tripping or just need a weekend reset, you’ll find plenty to explore without the crowds.
Best Time to Visit
If you ask me, the sweet spot to visit Big Rapids is from May through October. I’ve kayaked on the river in the summer and biked local trails in the fall—both are fantastic. The foliage in October? It’s like a painting. If you don’t mind the cold, winter offers its own quiet charm with snow-dusted trails and cozy cafés to warm up in.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in on US-131—it’s about an hour north of Grand Rapids and around 3.5 hours from Detroit. It’s an easy and scenic ride.
- By Air: If you’re flying, Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) in Grand Rapids is your best bet. From there, it’s a straight shot north on US-131. I’ve done it many times—it’s simple and stress-free.
- By Bus: You can also take Indian Trails or Greyhound. I’ve chatted with travelers who’ve come in by bus—it’s a solid option if you’re coming from other Michigan cities.
Where to Stay
- Holiday Inn Big Rapids: I’ve stayed here for its convenience and comfort. You’ll love the indoor pool and how close it is to both downtown and Ferris State University.
- Country Inn & Suites: This one has a welcoming vibe and a great breakfast. I always feel at home here, and the staff has that small-town friendliness you don’t get everywhere.
- Local Cabins & Airbnbs: If you’re looking for something quieter, I recommend booking a cabin near the river or woods. I’ve had some wonderfully peaceful stays where the only sounds were birds and water.
