More than 100 years ago an unpretentious little observatory was established in Observatory Park in Gaithersburg. This little observatory is linked to 5 other observatories in cities around the world, all of which tracked the wobble of the earth on its polar axis, in order to aid navigation.

Today, the early sky watchers have been replaced by computers, but Observatory Park in Gaithersburg still hosts periodic sky-watching sessions for the public. If you take the time to visit the park you will find that it has been laid out to represent the earth’s motion by means of strategically placed benches, paths and landscaping.
