If you’ve been dreaming of rolling hills, white-fenced horse farms, and smooth Kentucky bourbon, you’ve got to visit Versailles. (And just so you know, it’s pronounced “ver-SALES”—I learned that the first time I visited!) Nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass Region, this small town completely charmed me. Whether you’re chasing the bourbon trail or just looking for a scenic weekend escape, I think you’ll find Versailles full of beauty, history, and that slow-paced Southern magic.

Versailles, KY Highlights:

  • For Adventurous Travelers: Drive the scenic Bluegrass Byway – I took this drive on a crisp fall morning and it was stunning. You’ll wind past horse farms, stone fences, and postcard-worthy pastures. It’s one of those drives where you’ll want to pull over just to take in the view.
  • For History Buffs: Tour the majestic Castle & Key Distillery – I didn’t expect a castle tucked into bourbon country, but there it was. You’ll tour gorgeous grounds, sip small-batch bourbon, and hear stories that go back more than a century. It’s history with a twist—literally.
  • For Shoppers: Browse handmade goods at local markets – I always love picking up something local, and downtown Versailles is full of treasures. You’ll find Kentucky-made crafts, antiques, jams, and more—it’s the kind of shopping that feels personal and fun.
  • For Couples: Stroll the grounds of Keeneland Racecourse – I brought my partner here on a spring visit and it was such a sweet experience. You can tour the barns, maybe catch a morning workout, or plan around race season for a day at the track—it’s both elegant and exciting.
  • For Families: Picnic and explore at Falling Springs Park – I came here for some fresh air and ended up staying longer than I planned. You’ll find walking trails, open fields, and a playground that’s perfect if you’ve got kids in tow—or if you just need a laid-back afternoon under the trees.

Best Time to Visit Versailles, KY

From my visits, I can tell you that spring and fall are the best times to experience Versailles at its finest. April and May bring bright green fields and blooming trees, while September and October offer crisp air, horse races in nearby Lexington, and the most beautiful fall foliage I’ve seen in Kentucky. You really can’t go wrong with either season.

How to Get to Versailles, KY

  • If you are traveling by car: I drove in from Lexington—it’s a quick 20-minute trip. Versailles sits right off Bluegrass Parkway and U.S. Route 60, making it easy to reach from just about anywhere in central Kentucky. It’s also about 1.5 hours from Louisville if you’re making a longer trip.
  • By Air: The closest airport is Blue Grass Airport (LEX), which is just 15 minutes away. I flew in once, grabbed a rental, and was sipping bourbon in Versailles before lunch.
  • By Train or Bus: There’s no train station in town, but I’ve used Greyhound and regional buses to get into Lexington and then driven the rest of the way. If you’re flexible, it works just fine.

Where to Stay in Versailles, KY

  • The Woodford Hotel – I stayed here for a weekend and loved being downtown. You’ll enjoy walkable access to shops and restaurants plus boutique charm that feels really welcoming.
  • The Kentucky Castle – If you want something unforgettable, this is it. I stayed once for a special occasion and felt completely pampered—from the spa to the farm-to-table dinner to the castle tours. It’s luxury with a unique twist.
  • Montgomery Inn B&B – This inn gave me that cozy, home-away-from-home vibe. You’ll love the Victorian touches, comfy rooms, and those amazing gourmet breakfasts. The innkeepers made me feel like family.
