Need a lively Ohio River getaway with city views, family fun, and local flavor? Then trust me—head to Newport, KY! Every time I visit, I’m blown away by how much there is to do just across the river from Cincinnati. It’s walkable, fun, and full of surprises—whether you're marveling at sea life, crossing scenic bridges, or sipping a cocktail with a skyline view.
Newport, KY Highlights:
- Visit Newport Aquarium: This is one of the best aquariums I’ve been to. You can walk through shark tunnels, touch stingrays, and watch playful penguins up close—it’s a hit for both kids and adults.
- Stroll the Purple People Bridge: I always take the time to walk this pedestrian bridge—it’s a scenic route connecting Kentucky and Ohio with fantastic views of the river and city skyline.
- Shop and dine at Newport on the Levee: This hub has everything—restaurants, shops, games, and a relaxed riverfront vibe. It’s a great place to spend a whole afternoon or evening.
- Tour the World Peace Bell: It’s impressive up close—one of the largest swinging bells in the world and a unique landmark worth seeing while you’re in town.
- Explore historic East Row District: I’ve wandered this neighborhood and loved the gorgeous Victorian homes and leafy streets. It’s like stepping back in time with a side of charm.
Best Time to Visit Newport, KY
I personally think April to October is the sweet spot. The weather is warm and perfect for enjoying everything along the river. Summer is especially lively, with festivals, fireworks, and lots of outdoor dining. In fall, the crisp air and foliage make for beautiful strolls across the bridges and through historic neighborhoods.
How to Get to Newport, KY
- If you are traveling by car: Newport is right off I-471, just across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati. It’s super easy to get to by bridge and takes only minutes from the city.
- By Air: I usually fly into Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)—it’s only a 20–25 minute drive, and car rentals or rideshares are easy to find.
